Lubbock Local Guide

The rain in Spain stays mainly on the Plain. Or should I say the rain in West Texas falls in the month of July. I know that doesn't rhyme, but with rain totals reaching 6 inches in the first 8 days of the month, exceeding our averages by more than 5 inches, I am beginning to wonder if I should start ordering "ARK" supplies.

The Coach Leach saga is going into the appellate court as I write. The paper today said that the new Tech trainer has pending lawsuit from former player at Auburn, which has former coach Mike Leach’s lawyers furious. University says it checked Arnold Gambler's background and have no concerns. Check out the entire story on lubbockonline.com. I just want this settled.

The big 12 lost Nebraska and Colorado last month when they decided to go to other conferences. Which lead to the following statements from Coach Tubberville. “We have a 10-team league right now, but I just don’t know how long that’s going to last, to be honest with you.” The big 12 then issued a reprimand on its athletic website saying Tuberville’s comments were a “violation of the Big 12 Conference’s Principles and Standards of Sportsmanship, prohibiting public criticism of members.”

Really, a reprimand for that, doesn’t the big 12 have bigger fish to fry. I appreciate Coach Tuberville for stating the obvious and am starting to wonder if the big 12 is becoming oblivious to the future.

We would like to give a shout out to the Jehovah Witnesses that came to Lubbock for their conference. It was a pleasure to have you here at The Arbor and in our city. Also, the baseball College Hall of Fame did their annual award show in Lubbock. Rice's Anthony Rendon was named the 2010 winner of the Dick Howser Award, given to the nation's top collegiate baseball player. West Virginia's Jedd Gyorko won the Brooks Wallace Award as the top shortstop in the country, and Florida State pitcher/outfielder Mike McGee was the inaugural winner of the John Olerud Two-Way Player of the Year Award. Ohio State hurler Alex Wimmers won the National Pitcher of the Year Award. Congratulations to all the players who were nominated.

To answer the most frequently asked question, where should we eat dinner? I will send to some of my current favorites. Sadly enough my places of choice right now are fast food. I know, I know it is bad for you but my kids are out of school for summer and we are not at home much so fast food is the only consensus. Our favorites are Taco Villa, Chick-fill-a and Whataburger.

I would like to express my pride for my kids. We told them at the beginning of the summer break that sitting around on the couch being a lump was out of the question. So my son Robbie goes to victory camp everyday for 2 hours lifting weights, has been to 2 basketball camps and does open gym 2 to 3 times a week. You can certainly see the dedication and the new found muscles in his arms. My daughter Melissa did summer volleyball league, goes to gold medal square next week and has been working 40 hours a week as a front desk clerk. I know everyone thinks their kids are the greatest but mine really are. Love both of you two so tight.

Thanks for reading.
